Happy Memoris of Summer School
The students were asked to reflect on their summer experiences and choose their favorite happy memory. Here's what they had to say:
This is a really hard thing to decide. All of the field trips were really fun and cool and all of the workshops were really. When I go over all of my memoirs, I think I have to go with five of my favorite field trips. Hanauma Bay, Black Point beach, Papahana Kuaola, and Canoe Paddling. My favorite workshop was Poi pounding.
Anna Praywell
I had so much fun at this summer school. We got to go a lot of fun field trips. Some of the field trips I enjoyed was Hanauma Bay Black point beach and Alan Davis Beach.I enjoyed Hanauma Bay because I love seeing all the fish. It was not just any ordinary fish But it was yellow tanks and butterfly fish. Like Black Point beach because i took a risk and jumped off the walls.Last but not least I liked going to Alan Davis beach because I liked catching crabs and fish.
Tiffany Tsukiyama
I think the best field trips was Black Point Beach and Hanauma bay, because at Hanauma bay I got to see fishes that I never got to see before. It was so amazing! I really liked Black Point Beach because I got to jump of ledges and also because I got to see other fishes like the school of trumpet fish. I really wish I knew about this nature study thing in forth grade because I want to do the same class again.
Tara Kaneshiro
My favorite field trip was going to Hanauma bay because I got to see lots of cool fish. and lots of coral. there was shallow water I could swim in. that is why Hanauma bay was my favorite field trip
Mia Murasaki
I had so much fun at this summer school. We got to do a lot of cool things .Probably my favorite place was Black Point beach. We got to go snorkeling or fishing or jump off ledges. I had so much fun there because I went fishing with my friends. We also went snorkeling. There weren't many fish but lots of rocks. This is what I will remember the most.
Kevin Huang
My happy memory is when we went to Black-point beach. I liked it because we got to jump off a wall and it was super fun! I was scared at first but this class made me do things I was before scared of doing but now I am not.
Emma Choi
It will be so sad to have to leave this school because I had so much fun. One memory I really enjoyed throughout this summer school was when we went to Hanauma bay. What was fun there was getting to snorkel and see all of the fish and well just hang out with friends. since this summer was so interesting I really don't want to leave.
Caleb Kurasaki
My happy memory was all the field trips. I have 7 of them: The Lyon Arboretum, Kanewai Lo'i, Pa'i'ai, Kualoa Beach Park, Papahana Kuaola, Hanauma Bay, and Black Point Beach. These are the field trips I love. I had a wonderful time.
Kelli Chung
My happy memory is the field trip to Black Point Beach. My dad and grampa came. When we arrived a very nice lifeguard came and told us the rules. Then we went to go clean up the beach even though there was not much trash. Then she told us we can go when we were done picking up trash, but unfortunately Papa slipped on a rock and scraped his knee and I got a cut on my toe. Then we jumped off the rock and went snorkeling and left.
Arielle Brinkman
My favorite field trip was going to Hanauma Bay because there were so many cool kinds of fish and coral. also there was shallow water I can swim in. That is why Hanauma Bay is my favorite field trip.

My happy memory is getting to work with all of you this summer! I appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to try everything we did...mud, rain, worms, squid, fish, and much more! I had a blast seeing your excitement as we discovered the beauty of nature! Thank you for a super summer. Enjoy the rest of your summer and I hope to see you next summer.

Cromwells/Doris Duke's Beach Cleanup
On Wednesday the class aloing with a few parents and grandparents, enjoyed a beautiful day at the beach. We went down to Cromwells beach and did a beach cleanup. After cleaning our environment we jumped off the wall at Doris Dukes and had a big splash competition. A seaweed (limu) war quickly ensued as we made our way back to the reef. Since the tide was low the students got to hunt for crustaceans in the tide pools. All in all we had lots of fun in the sun.
Mad Science Scientists
Thursday's class was filled with guest speakers about environmental issues. First the class heard from the Mad Scientist, Electric Ed, about how oil spills effect surrounding ecosystems. Then we did an experiment where the students actually cleaned up a fake oil spill using only q-tips, cotton balls, string, and a straw. It was a pretty fun experiment. Next up we had a presentation from David Aquino from the Blue Planet Foundation. He pointed out some very important issues surrounding Hawaii and our oil consumption, which is pushing $5 Billion per year. We also did an experiment using our own energy to power regular (OST), LED, and CFL lightbulbs. It took much more manpower to power our regular lightbulbs than the other two.
Gyotaku Fishprinting
Tuesdays class was a colorful one as the students painted and printed their Gyotaku designs onto rice paper, shirts, pillow cases, and handbags. They used the following fish: menpachi, weke, and maiko to do the fish prints and the scales really came through well for everyone.

Tide Pool Reef Walk at Alan Davis
On Monday the class made a trek out to the Alan Davis area near Sandys beach. The class spread out throughout the tide pools and attempted to catch a variety of sea creatures. The catch of the day ranged from the slower hermit crabs, sea cucumbers, brittle stars to the swifter guppies, minnows, and jumping jacks. The class learned that brittle stars are faster than you think and much harder to find. Altogether it was a great study of the marine tide pool life.

Recap of Week 4 and Reminders
Aloha everyone! Week 4 was a combination of ocean study and sustainability. Here is a recap of our week:
sorry about the late drop off at school. There was road work going on in Kuliouou and it took us
over an hour to get from Hanauma Bay to Kuliouou. After we cleared that traffic jam, the roads were
clear. What a mess!
Reminders for our last week of school:
Please send a shopping bag this week for your child to take home his/her belongings and projects. Mahalo!
Mon., July 16- Reef Walk at Alan Davis Beach in Hawaii Kai- We still need chaperones for this field trip. Please email me if you are able to help. Please check the calendar for items that your child will need. If you are chaperoning, please also wear reefwalkers, tabis, or shoes.
Tues., July 17- Speaker from Blue Planet Hawaii will talk to us about what we can do to help the environment. We will also be doing Gyotaku (fish printing) at 10:10. I would appreciate it if I could have a couple of parents to help with this activity. Please let me know if you are available to help.
Please send something for your child to print on. Suggested items are: light colored t-shirt (no print on at least one side of the shirt), pillowcase, dishtowel (not terrycloth), fabric. They can do more than one print if they want.
I have 3 fish for printing, but if you happen to have any fish that you can donate, that would be great. The fish need to have scales and be approximately 6-8 inches long. Mahalo!
Wed., July 18- Black Point Beach- We could also use a couple of parents to chaperone for this field trip. Please email me if you are able to help. Please check the calendar for items to bring. The children can snorkel, swim, and jump off a wall by Doris Duke's estate if they would like to. We will have a lifeguard with us.
Thurs., July 19 - Mad Science Workshop- We will be learning about ocean pollution and the problems that it creates. We will also be taking a walk to the big recycling bin on campus and drop off items that the children bring. Suggested items: can, bottles, newspaper, bond paper, cardboard, plastic. Please send one bag of recycled items for your child to drop off.
Fri., July 20- Last Day! We will be doing a campus clean up as part of our contribution to keep the Earth clean! We will then be making kites and flying them on campus.
Our last activity will be harvesting our garden and making a salad from our lettuce and herbs. If you would like, it would be great if your child could either contribute an item to add to the salad (such as cucumber, tomatoes, mushrooms, soybeans, toppings, etc) or another snack item. We will enjoy our salad and snacks before school is dismissed. Mahalo!
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for allowing me to work with your child this summer. I have truly enjoyed getting to know each one of them. I hope they enjoyed learning about nature and exploring some of the hidden treasures on our island! Mahalo and have a great summer!
Aloha,
Cindy
- Mon., July 9- Aquarium- Our visit to the Waikiki Aquarium was interesting! The students saw a wide variety of vertebrates and invertebrates. We also got to touch some invertebrates in a touch tank. The highlight was watching the monk seals in the tank and seeing one of them trying to surf on a large plastic cover from a bin.The seal was entertaining and fun to watch!
- Tues., July 10: Squid Dissection and cooking- When the children first saw the squid that they were going to work with, many of them were apprehensive. However, they all took the risk and participated in the activity. After a while, they were so engrossed in the dissecting and discovering the body parts of the squid that they overcame their fear! Take a look at our blog to see what they did and their reactions to the calamari that we cooked!
- Wed., July 11- Hanauma Bay: Hanauma Bay was a very educational field trip. We went through an orientation so we could learn more about why Hanauma Bay is such a special place. The students then put on their snorkeling gear and discovered a whole new world of beautiful fish and sea creatures! Ask your child what he/she saw in the water.

- Thurs., July 12- Papermaking workshop: Ms. Carla from the Greenhouse Hawaii came to teach us how to make paper using 3 things: plant fibers from the Mother-in-Laws tongue, shreds of bond paper, and grayboard. Take a look at the pictures to see what we did! The finished product came out awesome and made us appreciate all the hard work that goes into making paper.
- Fri., July 13- Healthy Bodies, Healthy Planet- We were fortunate to have another workshop conducted by Ms. Carla. This time we learned about eating local and not wasting any of the plant materials that we use in our cooking activity. We cleaned, pounded, and mixed sweet potato (uala) with coconut milk and blue agave sweetener. The end product was a delicious sweet potato poi! Ask your child if they liked the flavor.
