Mad Science Scientists

Thursday's class was filled with guest speakers about environmental issues. First the class heard from the Mad Scientist, Electric Ed, about how oil spills effect surrounding ecosystems. Then we did an experiment where the students actually cleaned up a fake oil spill using only q-tips, cotton balls, string, and a straw. It was a pretty fun experiment. Next up we had a presentation from David Aquino from the Blue Planet Foundation. He pointed out some very important issues surrounding Hawaii and our oil consumption, which is pushing $5 Billion per year. We also did an experiment using our own energy to power regular (OST), LED, and CFL lightbulbs. It took much more manpower to power our regular lightbulbs than the other two.
